D.C. desparately needs some more letterboxes, but Im
not sure where a good place would be to put one.

There are a number of trails in DC area parks -- in Greenbelt Park, the
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Rock Creek Park -- but they're all in the
National Park System, so letterboxing is discouraged. Plus, I have to
wonder about beefed-up security in the nation's capital and whether
letterboxing would be tolerated in many locations within the district's
boundaries.

You might look at nearby state parks in Maryland & Virginia -- and don't
forget to check the clue page on the LBNA site for those states, since some
of them are right on the outskirts of DC.

I like to surf through the web site of a state's parks department to find
interesting parks and trails. Then I can find new places to visit and get
ideas for future letterboxes to create.

Try www.trails.com and www.wildernet.com to find nearby parks, too.

Doug

I think I have found about 21 letterboxes in the DC area! And there
are still awhole bunch out there that I have not even hunted for
yet. Doug is right, maybe you need to check out the Maryland and
Virginia sections of the clues list.

I was actually meaning within D.C. I know that there
are plenty around D.C. as I have found many of them.
Maybe I shouldve clarified. I was just looking for
other ideas for places that might be accessible by
metro or without a car.

Take a look at this list of trails in DC:
http://www.washdc.org/trail.html

The trails that are listed also include directions to the nearest Metro
station.

Tough one...
everything is under the control of the National Park Service...
and if you leave a stray box in or near a public place...it's gonna be
moved...security reasons, ya know.

I was amazed at the possibilities in our nation's wonderful capital,
and hope to plant some more this fall when we're down for the Marine
Corps Marathon. Since the events of last fall, I think even more that
everyone should plan a visit there. Here's the source I use for
ideas: hope it helps!

Jay, for some reason we can't open this page. We've never been able
to, is it our computer?

Try correcting the spelling of "capital"! Works better then.
:-)

I think there are lots of great spots in DC. Certainly, there are lots of
public spaces, though many are well-traveled. I think a large number of
"micro-letterboxes" may be in order; say, 35mm film can sized, or maybe a
little larger.

There has to be a strict stealth protocol among searchers, too, or the
boxes don't stand much of a chance inside the Beltway. Is there a
letterboxer etiquette FAQ, by any chance? I see occasional faux pas on the
list, of the "I PUT THE HITCHHIKER OVER HERE!" variety. ;-)
